Description
Third Beach, between Ferguson Point and Siwash Rock on the west side of Stanley Park is a popular sunbathing and swimming beach in the summer. There is a lifeguard on duty from May to September and the Third Beach concession stand, behind the beach atop a small rise, will keep you stocked up with hot dogs, coffee and cold drinks.
Also up on the rise overlooking the southern end of Third Beach is a small cairn which marks the burial place of the ashes of Emily Pauline Johnson Tekahionwake, the Mohawk poet and storyteller, friend of Chief Joe Capilano and Victorian celebrity who made Vancouver her permanent home in 1909. She published the stories of Chief Capilano's people, including legends like "The Siwash Rock" and "Deadman's Island", in her classic "Legends of Vancouver". She died in 1913 after a battle with cancer.
